With the adoption of the Art Restitution Act in 1998, the Republic of Austria assumed responsibility for identifying movable artworks and cultural objects in the federal collections that had been confiscated during the Nazi period and transferring them to their former owners or legal successors. The Commission for Provenance Research is responsible for the systematic investigation of the collections. The results are submitted to the Art Restitution Advisory Board and on that basis the Board makes recommendations to the Federal Minister responsible as to whether restitution should take place.
In the event of a positive restitution decision, the owners or their legal successors are identified and contacted to arrange for the transfer of the objects.
This website contains comprehensive information and contact details for all those who are interested in the work of the Commission for Provenance Research and Art Restitution Advisory Board, who require help in research or who are looking themselves for confiscated objects.
